The documentary, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” has stayed on my mind the past few weeks. It is about the life and the life’s work of Fred Rogers, the creator of Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood. It is about a value and purpose driven life. His belief that every child needs to feel lovable just the way they are in order to thrive, and that we all need to treat each other with kindness and respect are like a balm for the heart. This sounds like common sense – and yet we know how uncommon common sense is. The documentary reminded me of the line from Mary Oliver’s poem entitled “The Summer Day” ‘Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?’
